Avoid Detoxes If You’re Trying To Gain Weight & Build Muscle

Seems like lately there’s been a lot of hype surrounding detoxes, fasts, and colon cleanses aimed at making you healthier. The thought process behind all of this is that detoxes will allow your digestive system to rest, get rid of all impurities within the body, make your skin glow, increase your mood, and allow you to build muscle mass and gain weight quicker.

Well, interestingly enough a doctor that specializes in gastroenterology at the University of Southern Alabama, by the name of Jack DiPalma, says that detoxes and colon cleanses don’t detoxify anything! He goes on to mention that cleansing enemas are actually dangerous because they can puncture your colon or introduce infection if they’re unsanitary. Funny he mentions this because I know handful of individuals who are huge fans of detoxes, yet they seem to always be sick (hopefully they don’t read this article…..lol)!

Doctor DiPalma recommends to eat around 20 grams of fiber per day if you’re really concerned with keeping yourself nice and healthy.

A downfall of detoxes, especially fasts, is that they require you to eat a ridiculously low amount of calories. If you were to do this, especially for several days in a row, not only will you run the risk of causing harm to your metabolism, but also will cause a dramatic loss of muscle mass. Obviously, if you’re a skinny individual that feels that it’s a big challenge to build muscle and gain weight, this would be a big no-no.
