Low Carbs Are Not A Magic Wand

I titled this article this way because it’s beginning to get ridiculous how even bodybuilding or fitness publications people are completely missing the boat on how to build muscle and / or burn fat. Case in point is this whole “low carb / ketogenic diet” craze that’s sweeping everybody by storm, right off of their feet, as a matter of fact.

Since diets like Atkins and the Zone have come back into play everyone now seems to praising the skies out of eat a very low carb, regardless if you’re into muscle building or toning up. Well, in a 2008 study titled “Effects Of A High Protein Ketogenic Diet On Hunger, Appetite, and Weight Loss In Obese Men Feed Ad Libitum” they took two groups of individuals, one group was placed on a a low carb / ketogenic diet, which only contained 4% carbs, and the second group was placed on a moderate carbohydrate eating regimen that was made up of 35% carbs. Both groups ate the same amount of protein. Other than that, they were told they could as much as they wanted as long as they stayed within one of those two guidelines, depending on what group they were in for this study.

They found that those that were in the low carb diet ate fewer calories than the moderate carb group…..which more than likely allowed them to lose more weight. Now, the typical individual will look at this study and say “Hey, you see! That’s why low carb diets are so much better!”. Hold on for a minute. Read again. It wasn’t that eating a low amount of carbohydrates was a magical wand. It was simply the fact that eating that way made them feel less hungry, so then they ate less overall calories!

As I’ve said a billion times now, it isn’t some magical breaking down into specific ratios or percentages how you eat………to build muscle mass or burn fat the bottom line will always and forever be about the calories….period!
